About Us & FIRST

About Us

We are Team Titanium from Lee's Summit West High School, in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Our name is derived from our school mascot - the Titan. In our three years of FRC competition, we have traveled to places such as St. Louis, Denver, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Atlanta for various tournaments. Along with Lee's Summit High School's Team 1730 "Team Driven", and Lee's Summit North High School's Team 1987 "Broncobots", we have formed the Summit Robotics Alliance to assist each other and spread the word of FIRST throughout the community. More information about the alliance may be found on Team Driven's website.

Many sponsors have helped us with our endeavors, and we are very grateful to them. Our team is coached by Mr. and Mrs. Spatz, and Mr. Bailey. We have many more teachers and engineers that also mentor and help us succeed each year, and their support is also appreciated.

We would like to thank FIRST for providing a challenge to bring us together and inspire teamwork. In taking on the FIRST Robotics Challenge we have experienced real-world engineering situations. We have overcome challenges and made significant accomplishments. We've also found that we can work with other teams in the spirit of gracious professionalism.

To other robotics teams; we hope you illustrate the idea of gracious professionalism like other teams have demonstrated towards us, and we will do our best to do the same. Good luck this year!

In our three complete years of competition, we have won the following awards and tournament placements:

  • 2009 10,000 Lakes Chairman's Award
  • 2009 10,000 Lakes Semifinalist
  • 2009 Kansas City Quarterfinalist
  • 2009 Kansas City Imagery Award
  • 2008 Colorado Finalists
  • 2008 Colorado Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control
  • 2008 Kansas City Semifinalist

About FIRST

Note: Much of the information about FIRST may also be found in a similar form on the official USFIRST.org website.

As stated on the main page, the mission of FIRST is:

To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes."

- Dean Kamen, Founder

FIRST was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in technology, science, math, and engineering, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

A core value of FIRST is Gracious Professionalism™, which is the idea of being in a competitive environment, while still maintaining respect for other teams. Respect is not the only thing given to others, as assistance is also offered to opposing teams. Trash talking and other rude comments that you would likely see at a football game or other sporting events are not encouraged in FIRST. Gracious Professionalism™ also produces quality work, recognizes the value of others, and promotes peer respect.

FIRST works closely with academic and research organizations to provide real evidence of our impact on students.

“When compared with the comparison group, FIRST students are:

  • More than 3 times as likely to major specifically in engineering.
  • Significantly more likely to expect to achieve a post graduate degree.
  • Nearly 4 times as likely to expect to pursue a career in engineering.
  • More than twice as likely to volunteer in their communities.”
